The few good moments never live up to their promises and all the bad writing and art are multiplied many times over.SonOfCthulhuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10360440962585168404noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-453019142012088904.post-32561581433987466552016-01-04T18:29:42.527-08:002016-01-04T18:29:42.527-08:00Pretty much sums it all up. It's such a mixed bag. He renders most of the women characters exceptionally well, it's almost remarkable how classicly drawn they are and how well the figure work is on the ladies. He completely avoids the 90's trappings of exaggerated female features...and then he gets to Nuklon and Flash and BAM! POW! He's in your face with EXTREME anatomy. I don't get it. I'm sure he's trying to emulate Weringo's lead on a beefer Flash, but c'mon man, that's a stylistic choice, just like McGuiness's work, you can't just take what should be one of the slimest, or leanest characters of the DC Pantheon and only apply that beefy style to him, and leave all of the other characters' proportions normal. Those different art styles just doesn't belong in the same book together! Either apply that style to everyone, or no one at all! Obviously Obsidian and Flash's motifs are very different, so how you draw them will vary, but at the same time I think Obsidian and Flash should have fairly similar body types & proportions; it's crazy to see one compared to the other and see the ridiculous anatomy differences.

All that aside, it's still great to revist this issue and and this era. I myself have been going back and re-reading a lot of my favorite Superman comics from all eras over the past few days, including all of the Superman Zero Hour tie-ins. Some may claim that crossover doesn't hold up well, I still really enjoy it, and it has been a blast revisting that favorite from my childhood. I have absolutely loved revisting all 8 of Superman tie-ins. This version didn't gel for me or anyone I knew. I would rank it higher than the league of Vibe/Vixen/Martian Manhunter/Gypsy...but not much higher, mind you.SonOfCthulhuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10360440962585168404noreply@blogger.com
